Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD)
Understanding Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD)
Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) is a condition characterized by the gradual buildup of plaque—a combination of cholesterol, fats, and calcium—inside the arteries. This plaque narrows or blocks the arteries, impairing blood flow and increasing the risk of serious cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral artery disease (PAD). ASCVD typically develops over time due to risk factors including high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and genetic predisposition.
Common Signs and Symptoms of ASCVD:
- Chest Pain or Discomfort:
- A feeling of pressure, tightness, or squeezing in the chest, especially during physical activity.
- Shortness of Breath:
- Difficulty breathing, which may occur during exertion or even at rest as the disease advances.
- Fatigue:
- Persistent tiredness or reduced energy levels, often related to diminished heart function.
- Irregular Heartbeats:
- Noticeable palpitations or an abnormal heart rhythm.
- Pain Radiating to Other Areas:
- Discomfort spreading from the chest to the arms, neck, jaw, or back, which may signal a heart attack.
- Dizziness or Lightheadedness:
- Episodes of feeling faint or unsteady, potentially due to reduced blood flow.
