Chronic Kidney Disease
Understanding Healthy Kidney Function and Kidney Disease
Healthy kidneys play a critical role in filtering and eliminating waste products and toxins from the blood—substances that result from digestion, medications, and exposure to chemicals. In addition to waste removal through urine, the kidneys produce hormones that help stimulate red blood cell production, regulate blood pressure, and manage calcium metabolism.
Kidney disease occurs when the kidneys are unable to effectively perform these functions. This condition may result from traumatic injury, inadequate blood flow, severe dehydration, pregnancy complications, sepsis, an enlarged prostate, urine backup, or autoimmune disorders. When kidney function declines, waste products and toxins can accumulate in the body, potentially leading to serious complications, including renal failure.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Kidney Disease:
- Weakness:
- Persistent fatigue and a general feeling of low energy.
- Shortness of Breath:
- Difficulty breathing, especially during physical activity.
- Nausea:
- Ongoing nausea or vomiting due to toxin buildup.
- Swollen Ankles:
- Fluid retention causing swelling in the legs or ankles.
- Sleeping Difficulties:
- Trouble falling or staying asleep, possibly related to discomfort or metabolic imbalances.
Left untreated, kidney disease can lead to severe complications, such as renal failure, which in some cases may be life-threatening. If you experience any of these symptoms, please consult your physician for evaluation and appropriate treatment.
