Understanding COVID-19
COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It primarily spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. COVID-19 can cause a range of symptoms, from mild cold-like illness to severe respiratory distress. In some cases, it can lead to serious complications, hospitalization, or death, particularly in older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions. The disease has also been associated with long-term effects known as “Long COVID” in some individuals.
Common Signs and Symptoms of COVID-19:
Fever or Chills: Elevated body temperature often accompanied by shivering.
Cough: Persistent, often dry cough that can worsen over time.
Shortness of Breath or Difficulty Breathing: A feeling of breathlessness, especially during physical activity or at rest.
Fatigue: Unusual and persistent tiredness not relieved by rest.
Loss of Taste or Smell: Sudden and unexplained loss of the ability to taste or smell, often without nasal congestion.
Muscle or Body Aches: Generalized pain or soreness throughout the body.
Sore Throat: Irritation or pain in the throat, sometimes accompanied by hoarseness.
Congestion or Runny Nose: Symptoms resembling the common cold.
Nausea, Vomiting, or Diarrhea: Gastrointestinal symptoms may occur, particularly in children.
Headache: Persistent or severe headaches that may accompany other symptoms.
