Understanding Dermatomyositis
Dermatomyositis is a rare autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the muscles and skin, leading to muscle weakness and a distinctive skin rash. It can occur in both adults and children, with adult-onset cases being more common in women. This condition is believed to result from an abnormal immune response that causes inflammation in both muscle tissue and the skin.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Dermatomyositis:
-
Muscle Weakness:
- Often affecting the muscles closest to the trunk (proximal muscles), such as those in the shoulders and hips, leading to difficulty with tasks like climbing stairs or lifting objects.
-
Characteristic Skin Rash:
- A reddish or purplish rash on the eyelids (heliotrope rash) and over the knuckles (Gottron papules), as well as other areas of the body.
-
Fatigue and Malaise:
- Persistent tiredness and a general feeling of being unwell, which can impact daily activities.
-
Difficulty Swallowing:
- In some cases, inflammation may affect the muscles involved in swallowing, leading to dysphagia.
-
Joint Pain and Inflammation:
- Occasionally, joint discomfort or pain may accompany the muscle and skin symptoms.
