Advanced Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma
Understanding Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC)
Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) is a rare type of head and neck cancer that originates in the nasopharynx—the area behind the nose and above the throat. In advanced-stage NPC, the cancer has spread beyond the nasopharynx to nearby lymph nodes, surrounding tissues, or distant organs (metastatic NPC). NPC is strongly associated with Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infection, genetic predisposition, and environmental factors such as smoking and exposure to carcinogens.
Common Signs and Symptoms of NPC:
- Nasal Symptoms: Persistent nasal congestion, frequent nosebleeds, or a blocked nose.
- Ear-Related Issues: Hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or a sensation of fullness in the ears.
- Neck Masses: Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, which may be painless.
- Facial Discomfort: Pain or numbness in the face, particularly around the sinus areas.
- Headaches: Recurring headaches that do not resolve with over-the-counter medications.
- Other Symptoms: In advanced cases, symptoms related to the spread of cancer, such as difficulty swallowing or breathing.
