Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)
Understanding Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)
Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints (where the spine meets the pelvis). As an autoimmune form of arthritis, AS causes inflammation, pain, and stiffness, which over time can lead to the fusion of spinal vertebrae (ankylosis) and result in reduced flexibility and mobility. While AS is associated with the HLA-B27 gene, not all individuals with this gene develop the disease.
Common Signs and Symptoms of AS:
-
Chronic Back Pain:
- Persistent pain and stiffness in the lower back and buttocks, often worse in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
-
Reduced Spinal Mobility:
- Gradual loss of flexibility in the spine, leading to a hunched posture.
-
Sacroiliac Joint Pain:
- Discomfort or pain at the junction where the spine meets the pelvis.
-
Systemic Symptoms:
- Fatigue, low-grade fever, and general malaise during active phases of the disease.
-
Peripheral Joint Involvement:
- In some cases, inflammation and pain may also affect other joints, such as the hips or shoulders.
