Understanding Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) refers to a group of disorders that cause chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, which may include the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, or large intestine (colon). The two primary types of IBD are Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Inflammation in any portion of the digestive tract can disrupt normal digestion, leading to a range of gastrointestinal symptoms.

Common Signs and Symptoms of IBD:

• Abdominal Cramps and Bloating:
  • Persistent or recurring pain and discomfort in the abdomen, often accompanied by a feeling of fullness or bloating.
• Urgent Need for Bowel Movements:
  • Sudden and strong urges to have a bowel movement, sometimes with difficulty controlling the urge.
• Diarrhea:
  • Frequent, loose, or watery stools that may occur with or without blood or mucus.
• Unintended Weight Loss:
  • Loss of weight due to malabsorption, reduced appetite, or chronic inflammation.
• Other Potential Complications:
  • If left untreated, IBD can lead to complications such as ulcers, malnutrition, intestinal rupture, bowel obstruction, or an increased risk of colon cancer.
