Non-radiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA)
Understanding Non-Radiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA)
Non-Radiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints, leading to persistent back pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Unlike Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), nr-axSpA does not exhibit definitive structural damage on X-rays, although inflammation may be detected through MRI or other imaging techniques. This condition is part of the axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) spectrum and is associated with autoimmune mechanisms, often linked to the HLA-B27 gene.
Common Signs and Symptoms of nr-axSpA:
- Chronic Back Pain: Persistent discomfort in the lower back, often worsening with rest and improving with exercise.
- Morning Stiffness: Stiffness in the back and hips upon waking, which gradually eases with movement.
- Reduced Mobility: Limited range of motion in the spine and difficulty with activities requiring flexibility.
- Sacroiliac Joint Pain: Discomfort or pain in the joint area where the spine meets the pelvis.
- Fatigue: Ongoing tiredness or low energy levels, which can impact daily activities.
- Peripheral Symptoms: In some cases, pain or inflammation may also occur in peripheral joints or at sites where tendons and ligaments attach to bones (enthesitis).
