Understanding Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid Cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped organ located at the base of the neck. The thyroid plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature by producing essential hormones. Thyroid cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the thyroid, forming a tumor that may spread to other parts of the body.
Types of Thyroid Cancer:
- Papillary Thyroid Cancer (Most Common)
- Follicular Thyroid Cancer
- Medullary Thyroid Cancer
- Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer (Rare and Aggressive)
Common Signs and Symptoms of Thyroid Cancer:
Neck Lump or Swelling:
- A painless lump or swelling in the front of the neck is one of the earliest signs.
- May gradually increase in size and become noticeable during swallowing.
Voice Changes and Hoarseness:
- Tumors pressing on the vocal cords can cause persistent hoarseness or voice changes.
Difficulty Swallowing or Breathing:
- As the tumor enlarges, it may put pressure on the esophagus or windpipe, leading to swallowing difficulties or shortness of breath.
Persistent Neck or Throat Pain:
- Pain in the front of the neck, which may radiate to the ears.
Swollen Lymph Nodes:
- Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck may indicate the cancer has spread.
Unexplained Weight Changes and Fatigue:
- Some thyroid cancers may impact hormone production, leading to changes in metabolism, weight fluctuations, or fatigue.
