Thyrogen®

Understanding Thyrogen®

Thyrogen® is used in the management of thyroid cancer and for thyroid function testing in patients with well-differentiated thyroid cancer who have undergone thyroidectomy. It works by mimicking thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which temporarily increases thyroglobulin levels and stimulates iodine uptake in thyroid cells. This action allows for testing or radioiodine (RAI) treatment without the need to stop thyroid hormone therapy, thereby avoiding the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

How Thyrogen® Works:

  • Mimics TSH, stimulating thyroid cells.
  • Enables thyroid cancer testing without stopping thyroid hormone therapy.
  • Allows for radioiodine (RAI) treatment while maintaining normal thyroid function.

FDA Approval:

  • Thyrogen®: Approved on December 2, 1998
