Understanding Arthritis
Arthritis is a broad term for conditions that cause inflammation, pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints. These conditions can arise from autoimmune diseases, the natural wear and tear of aging, infections, or metabolic issues. Arthritis encompasses several types, each with its own characteristics:
- Osteoarthritis (OA): A degenerative joint disease caused by the breakdown of cartilage.
- Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): An autoimmune disorder that leads to joint inflammation.
- Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA): Associated with psoriasis, this form causes both joint and skin inflammation.
- Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA): Arthritis that affects children.
- Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS): An inflammatory arthritis primarily affecting the spine.
- Gout: A condition where uric acid crystal buildup in the joints leads to sudden and severe pain.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Arthritis:
- Joint Pain and Stiffness: Persistent discomfort and reduced range of motion, often worsening after periods of inactivity.
- Swelling and Warmth: Inflamed joints may appear swollen, red, and feel warm to the touch.
- Decreased Mobility: Limited joint movement can affect daily activities.
- Worsened Symptoms with Movement: In some cases, inflammation in joints near the chest may lead to discomfort when breathing.
