Paget’s Disease
Understanding Paget’s Disease of Bone
Paget’s Disease of Bone is a chronic bone disorder in which the normal process of bone remodeling is disrupted. This disruption leads to excessive and disorganized bone formation, resulting in bones that are weakened, enlarged, and deformed. These abnormal changes in bone structure can cause pain, increase the risk of fractures, and lead to arthritis. Paget’s Disease commonly affects the spine, pelvis, skull, and long bones such as the femur and tibia. Although the exact cause is unknown, genetic factors and viral infections may contribute to its development.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Paget’s Disease of Bone:
-
Bone Pain:
- Persistent or intermittent pain in the affected bones, often worsening with activity.
-
Bone Deformities:
- Enlargement or misshaping of bones, which may lead to noticeable changes in appearance.
-
Fractures:
- An increased risk of bone fractures, even with minimal trauma.
-
Joint Pain and Arthritis:
- Secondary joint pain due to abnormal bone growth and subsequent stress on adjacent joints.
-
Hearing Loss:
- In some cases, skull involvement can lead to hearing impairment.
