Ulcerative Colitis (UC)
Understanding Ulcerative Colitis (UC)
Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that primarily affects the colon (large intestine) and rectum. It causes inflammation and the formation of ulcers in the inner lining of the colon, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and rectal bleeding. UC is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the immune system mistakenly attacks the digestive tract, resulting in chronic inflammation.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis:
-
Diarrhea: Frequent bowel movements that may be urgent and often contain mucus or blood.
-
Abdominal Pain and Cramping: Persistent pain and cramping, especially in the lower abdomen.
-
Rectal Bleeding: The presence of blood in the stool, ranging from streaks to more significant amounts.
-
Urgency to Bowel Movements: A sudden and strong need to have a bowel movement, sometimes with difficulty controlling it.
-
Weight Loss: Unintended weight loss due to malabsorption and reduced appetite.
-
Fatigue: Persistent tiredness that may be related to chronic inflammation and nutrient deficiencies.
-
Extraintestinal Manifestations: In some cases, UC can also affect other parts of the body, leading to joint pain, skin lesions, or eye inflammation.
