Alymsys®
Understanding Alymsys®
Alymsys® (bevacizumab-maly) is a prescription vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor biosimilar to Avastin® (bevacizumab). It is FDA-approved, in specific treatment settings and regimens, for certain colorectal, lung, brain, kidney, cervical, ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancers. Alymsys® is administered by intravenous infusion and works by binding VEGF, preventing it from interacting with receptors on endothelial cells involved in new blood-vessel formation. Alymsys® is not indicated for the adjuvant treatment of colon cancer.
How Alymsys® Works:
- Targets VEGF: Alymsys® contains bevacizumab-maly, a recombinant humanized monoclonal IgG1 antibody that binds vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).
- Blocks VEGF signaling: By binding VEGF, bevacizumab-maly prevents VEGF from interacting with its receptors, Flt-1 and KDR, on endothelial cells. This inhibits VEGF-mediated endothelial-cell proliferation and new blood-vessel formation.
- Reduces blood-vessel growth in preclinical models: In mouse xenotransplant models of colon cancer, bevacizumab products reduced microvascular growth and inhibited metastatic disease progression.
